Barbara Ann (Hatch) Shute, formerly of Londonderry and Gorham, NH, passed away on Thursday November 28, 2024 at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, NH, after a brief illness. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Shute was born in Newburyport, MA, on June 10, 1933; graduated from Newburyport High School in 1951; and earned an associate’s degree from Fisher Junior College in 1953. She held several employment positions, ending in January 1999, at United Parcel Service (UPS) Call Center in Manchester, NH. She also enjoyed selling Dutch Maid clothing via a home party plan.
She married her high school sweetheart, Malcolm Eugene Shute, on December 27, 1953. They initially lived in Texas and California before returning to Rowley, MA. She lived in Londonderry, NH, from 1962 until she and her husband retired. They then relocated to Gorham in 2001 to be near her son and his family. Since early 2023, she was a resident of Coos County Nursing Home in Berlin and eagerly participated in nearly all activities.
Mrs. Shute was very involved in the lives of her granddaughters and greatly enjoyed attending dance recitals and school events, as well as helping them sell and deliver Girl Scout cookies. Her granddaughters cherished annual gingerbread house making (from scratch) to kick off the holiday season she made so special. As her granddaughters grew up and moved away, she enjoyed one-on-one lunches and day trips in between the special photos they sent to her electronic picture frame – replacing her dozens of physical family photo albums. She was very proud of the accomplishments of her son and granddaughters.
She enjoyed travel, including trips in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Her hobbies included quilting, ten pin bowling, sending handwritten notes, and crafts of all kinds. Mrs. Shute told others that her life had “truly been amazing.” Her best advice to others was to “be happy where they are [and to] have a good outlook on life . . . to find your way.”
She was pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years, Malcolm E. Shute; her brother, Robert Leslie Hatch; her mother, Gladys (White) Hatch; and her father, Warren Leslie Hatch.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Keith Shute, and his wife, Brenda, of Shelburne, NH; granddaughters Rachel Shute-Bushell of Massachusetts, Rebecca Shute of Vermont, and Amanda Perleche, of New Jersey; and her former daughter-in-law (whom Mrs. Shute thought of as the daughter she never had), Patricia B. Shute, of Berlin, NH.
A memorial service will be held at Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Avenue, in Berlin on Monday December 2, 2024 at 1 PM. There will be no calling hours.
