Mr. Bernard B. Hurst, Jr., 78, of Delaware, OH passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Grady Memorial Hospital in OH. He was born in Duhring WV on December 11, 1930 the son of Bernard and Ethel (Delp) Hurst. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served with the US Air Force. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1956 with a B.S. in civil engineering. In 1971, he was appointed District Deputy Director over District 6 in the Ohio Department of Transportation and appointed to Director of ODOT in 1987. From 1991 to 1999 he was employed by R.D. Zande Consulting Engineering Firm and retired in 2000. In April of 2007, he began working part time for E.P. Ferris and Associated as Senior Marketing Engineer. He also served on the Board of Directors of the International Road Federation. He was member of the William Street United Methodist Church since 1957; a former member of the Delaware Elks Club; he was a member and past master of Hiram Masonic Lodge, a member of the O.E.S., Scottish Rite and Aladdin Temple Shrine. In 1989, he was inducted into the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame, when Director of ODOT, for the beautification of the Interstate 71 interchanges adjacent to the fairgrounds. He also enjoyed vacationing in his wifes hometown of Colebrook, NH with his wife and her family. Members of his family include his wife Beverley (Bryant) Hurst of Delaware, OH; daughter Janet Lynn Hurst and husband Tom Goodnight of Columbia Station OH; son Jon Hurst and wife Jan of Beverly, MA; six grandchildren Ian, Craig, Katie, Jonathan, Alex and Christian; brothers Carl and David; and sisters Sybil, Ruby and Donnalee. A Graveside Service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Lary Cemetery in Gorham, NH. Arrangements are by the Bryant Funeral Homes, Berlin & Gorham, NH.
