Karl S. Scott, 100, of Berlin, NH, passed away on February 17, 2025 at his home. He was born in Pittsburg, NH on October 5, 1924, the son of Arthur and Iva E. (Day) Scott. Karl grew up in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in April of 1943 and served in World War II in the European Theater in the Combat Infantry, 102nd division from 1944-1945. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1946, Karl attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated in 1949 with a degree in forestry.
On June 20, 1948, Karl married his soulmate, Ernestine (Clogston). They were blessed with 73 years of marriage. Karl and Ernestine moved to Berlin in 1951. Karl worked for many years for the Brown Paper Company and the James River Company. He began as a forester/scaler in the woods and retired in 1987 as General Manager of the Woodland Department.
Karl was a member of the Berlin Congressional Church, UCC, the American Pulp Wood Association and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Berlin. He was a lifetime member of the 100 Club.
Karl and Ernestine enjoyed western style square dancing, traveling to conventions in Montreal, Indianapolis, and many other towns throughout New England. During retirement, they traveled throughout the continental United States, took three trips to Hawaii, and spent many winters in Florida. Karl enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, gardening, cross country skiing, and taking care of his home. He was an avid cribbage player and he was happy to teach others how to play.
Karl was an honorable man and a gentleman, who lived by the Golden Rule. He loved his family immensely, greatly enjoyed the time he spent with them, and would do anything he could for each of them. He was extremely proud of his granddaughters and was honored to celebrate their accomplishments. He cared deeply for his wonderful neighbors and friends, enjoyed their visits, sharing many stories and hearing about their lives and activities.
Karl lived life to the fullest. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a positive outlook on life. His favorite sayings were, “Do the best you can with what you have!” “I’ve been lucky all my life!” “I am truly blessed!” and “Every day is a bonus!”
This past Father’s Day, Karl had the opportunity to travel with the Honor Flight New England to Washington, DC. While there, he visited the World War II Memorial, met other veterans, and enjoyed the festivities honoring those who served.
On October 5, 2024, his family and friends were honored to celebrate his 100th birthday. We will cherish this very special memory.
Karl’s family would like to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to his very special neighbors and friends who did so much to help him. He especially enjoyed sharing his chocolates with his neighbor children.
